ASUTIL is an international non-profit civil association formed in 1994 to establish a chamber that gathers, represents and promotes the interests of companies and institutions that operate in the area of the Duty-Free Shops. Constituted as an association of private character, with no political purposes, it was registered in 1995 before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay.
Since its establishments in Montevideo, at the WTC, the most modern business complex in Uruguay, the General Assembly and the Board of Directors (supreme authority and permanent body of the Association respectively) seek the fulfillment of the By-Laws, and the achievement of their main goals: to work for the development of the industry; to collect and systematize legislation and information concerning Free Shops, and to disseminate it among its members; to guide, protect and represent them before governments and other associations and identities at local and international level, among others.
In pursue of its main purposes, ASUTIL has been developing different kinds of events, the classic annual CONFERENCE that rotates destinations every year, had its beginning in 1997, the ENCUENTRO DE FRONTERA, recently reshaped into the ENCUENTRO EBS (Encuentro Border Shops) had its first edition in November 2013, which combine efforts with the Cámara de Empresarios de Free Shops del Uruguay – CEFSU and it was created to develop the Duty-Free border stores. And last but not least in 2018, we joined forces with IAADFS and create the SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS, which compiles the best of each one of our events. And now once again adapting to this new virtuality we present you the SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS, a virtual experience which with our new partner The Moodie Davitt Report we hope you find it exciting, challenging and mostly a productive and efficient way of maintaining contact and doing business.
The International Association of Airport Duty Free Stores (IAADFS) is an international trade association with approximately 400 company members. The purpose of the IAADFS is to promote the airport duty free industry as an important segment of the international business community; provide activities whereby operators of airport duty free stores and their suppliers can exchange information on products and their duty free market potential; and serve as a collective voice in representing the airport duty free industry on common issues affecting the membership.
As international air travel developed in the years following World War II, the potential for duty free shopping in airport complexes was recognized. Accompanying that recognition was the need for a better understanding of the duty free business by government agencies and officials, as well as the need to provide a forum for the development of communication and business relationships between buyers and sellers of duty free products. In 1968, the IAADFS was formed to meet the needs of the airport duty free industry in the western hemisphere.
One of the association’s primary activities is the Duty Free & Travel Retail Summit of the Americas, co-hosted with ASUTIL, that is usually held during the spring in Florida. This annual event provides an opportunity for members of both organizations to meet with buyers from duty free and travel retail stores, to do business, network, and learn at valuable education sessions.
The association also provides other membership services including an ongoing government relations program which monitors activities that might have an impact upon IAADFS members and responds accordingly.
